Why did Jesus pray that we stay in this world?

God told the Jews to fear and obey Him so that they can POSSESS the land He had set before them. Yet God requires the same things from us even today, but for what reasons? Surely it is not to possess a part of heaven because only He has the right over it. So why does He want us to fear and obey Him, what benefits do we gain?

While some people believe that Jesus will soon return to bring us to heaven, Jesus actually asked His Father something different in John 17:15 – 18. He prayed, “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one… As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”

Why did Jesus pray that we stay in this world? Aside from the need to make disciples, I believe we have the same calling as Israel had – to POSSESS the land for the Lord! Why? In Deuteronomy 4:5–6 (NASB) Moses told Israel, “See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. “So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom… in the sight of the peoples who will hear… and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

God placed us where we are so that we can possess whatever He has set before us, be it a business, the company we work for, the community we live it, the school we go to, etc. But we cannot really own anything because God owns everything in this world; we can only STEWARD things for Him. So for me, to possess the land means to use my business and whatever He has entrusted to me to show the world that my God is wise and that only His ways will bring true success and lasting peace. Recently, I realized that if we refuse to live out this calling, people like ISIS will strive to possess the world instead. So let us not live our lives preparing to leave this world, instead let us live to possess it for the Lord.
